Computing

St Mary's Computing Policy

We use a bespoke scheme of work devised by the computing subject lead in consultation with a Computing consultant. This is supported by an Online -Safety scheme of work which teaches the children how to be safe online, as part of our Safeguarding procedures.

Intent

At St Mary’s Lewisham CE Primary School, our Computing curriculum aims to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world. Rooted in our Christian vision and values, we aim to develop confident, creative and responsible users of technology who understand how digital systems work and how they can be used purposefully and safely. We place a strong emphasis on online safety and digital responsibility, enabling children to recognise risks, make informed choices and show respect for themselves and others when using technology. Our curriculum is inclusive and ambitious, ensuring that all pupils can achieve their full potential regardless of background or starting point.

Implementation

Computing is taught discretely through the NCCE Teach Computing curriculum, which provides full coverage of the National Curriculum and ensures clear progression in computer science, information technology and digital literacy. Each year group studies a carefully sequenced range of units across the four key strands: computing systems and networks, programming, data and information, and creating media. Learning is practical, engaging and purposeful, with opportunities for pupils to apply their skills across the wider curriculum where appropriate.

Online safety is a fundamental part of our Computing provision. It is taught both through discrete lessons and embedded across all Computing units, supported by regular Key Stage assemblies and wider curriculum links. Pupils are taught how to stay safe online, understand digital risks and report concerns, in line with robust safeguarding and filtering procedures. Teaching promotes collaboration, problem-solving and creativity, with pupils encouraged to share and present their work to real audiences. Ongoing assessment through observation, discussion and review of digital outcomes ensures teaching is responsive and adapted to meet individual needs, including those of pupils with SEND.

Impact

As a result of our Computing curriculum, pupils at St Mary’s leave primary school as confident, capable and responsible digital citizens. They demonstrate secure understanding of key computing concepts, can apply their skills creatively across the curriculum, and approach problem-solving with resilience and curiosity. Pupils understand how to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly, and can articulate how to protect themselves and others online. Over time, all pupils make strong progress from their starting points and are well prepared for the next stage of their education and for life in an increasingly digital society.
