Intent
At St Mary’s, Art and Design is taught through the Kapow Primary Art and Design scheme, which provides a carefully sequenced curriculum that enables pupils to develop creativity, confidence, and practical skills. Pupils learn about a wide range of artists, designers, and craft makers, and are supported to express ideas, evaluate creative work, and understand how art reflects different cultures and periods in history. The curriculum is inclusive by design, ensuring all pupils, regardless of starting point, build knowledge and skills over time, while valuing individuality, creativity, and respect for others.
Implementation
Our Art and Design curriculum is fully aligned with the National Curriculum and delivered through a two-year rolling programme. Learning is sequenced so that key skills are revisited and built upon in a clear and progressive way across drawing, painting and mixed media, sculpture and 3D, and craft and design. Teachers use consistent approaches, including:
- Retrieval of prior learning
- Clear vocabulary teaching
- Sketchbooks
- Shared success criteria
Ongoing CPD and subject leader support ensure teaching is consistent and effective
Impact
Within Art and Design at St Mary’s, pupils take pride in their sketchbooks and finished outcomes, showing clear progression in skills, creativity, and independence over time. They can talk about techniques, artists, and their own learning, using appropriate subject-specific vocabulary.
Assessment and monitoring show that pupils achieve well, enjoy creative learning and are prepared for the next stage of their education.
